TestPlaformOpen source testing tools are becoming more and more popular especially with the constraints that are placed on the budgets of software testing organizations.  This trend continues to grow as adoption and acceptance of open source is more accepted even by the most traditional industries.  Open source testing communities are growing and this helps to foster communication between individuals to help solve complex testing challenges.

Here are some benefits of open source testing tools:

  1. The main benefit of using open source testing tools is the limited or no cost associated with using the tools.  Some open source testing tools have Pro versions where a small licensing cost is involved.
  2. A second benefit is a flexibility that open source testing tools provide.  Large commercial products usually limit the number of changes because they are working with a lot of customers.  Open source tools aren’t necessarily trying to appease customers but are focused on building what they believe is the best solution.
  3. A third benefit is the integration capabilities with other open source testing tools.  In the new world of software testing, one tool does not cover all the needs of software testers.  Test automation, mobile, performance, and software test management all require different capabilities and technologies to make everything work.
  4. There is general flexibility with open source testing tools and it is fairly easy to transition from using one tool and converting to another.  There is also flexibility in the software development languages that can be used.  For example, with Selenium the automated test scripts can be developed in various software testing languages.

Hopefully, this has helped to provide a better understanding of open source testing tools.  I will be developing additional articles related to open source software testing tools and be publishing those soon.
